Gillette Castle in Connecticut: A Fairytale Fortress with Hidden Secrets
I Found a Castle in Connecticut (Yes, Really!)
When you think of castles, your mind probably goes to Ireland, France, or some medieval fantasy movie. But guess what? Tucked away in East Haddam, Connecticut, there’s a real-life castle that looks like it belongs in a fairytale — Gillette Castle. And let me tell you, the first time I laid eyes on it, I thought: Am I in New England or Hogwarts?
A Theatrical Fortress on the River
The story behind this stone beauty is just as wild as the castle itself. It was built in the early 1900s by William Gillette, the actor best known for playing Sherlock Holmes. And honestly, you can feel the “detective vibes” everywhere. There are hidden mirrors, quirky secret features, and doors with custom latches that only he could dream up. It’s part fortress, part stage set, and 100% eccentric.
Exploring the Magic
Walking through the castle feels like stepping into another world. The rooms are cozy yet mysterious, with woodwork so detailed you can’t help but run your hands along the carvings. Outside, the grounds are just as magical — sprawling trails, picnic-perfect spots, and sweeping views of the Connecticut River that will make your jaw drop.

A glimpse inside Gillette Castle — photographed during my visit
This year we went during peak summer, but if you go in the fall? Oh. My. Gosh. The foliage around the castle blazes in orange, red, and gold. It looks like a painting come to life.
Why It’s Worth the Trip
- You’ll impress your friends when you casually say you spent the weekend at a castle.
- It’s family-friendly — kids love the secret nooks, and adults geek out over the architecture.
- It’s free to wander the grounds, and parking won’t cost you a dime.
- An amazing Connecticut River view
- The place is peaceful and relaxing.
- Bonus: The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry ride to get there feels like an adventure in itself.

My Takeaway
We visited with another family and the kids had a wonderful time playing along the place near to the walking trail and rivershore. We enjoyed a homemade lunch together and returned home with happy hearts.
Gillette Castle isn’t just a tourist stop — it’s a quirky slice of Connecticut history wrapped in stone walls and surrounded by breathtaking nature. Whether you’re hunting for Instagram-worthy shots, a day of hiking, or just want to say, “Yeah, I’ve been to a castle,” this spot should be on your list.
So next time you’re craving a little magic without hopping on a plane, head to East Haddam. Who knew Connecticut had a fairytale up its sleeve?
